Why have dental implants?

Missing teeth can lead to a variety of issues beyond just appearance. They can make biting and chewing difficult, which may affect your diet and overall nutrition. Speaking clearly can also become challenging, and over time, the surrounding teeth may shift, leading to misalignment. If the gap is visible when you smile or laugh, it can knock your self-confidence.

At our Cardiff practice, our experienced dental surgeons use the latest technology and advanced clinical skills to offer high quality dental implants as a fixed solution for missing teeth.

Dental Implant

What is a dental implant?

Think of a dental implant as a smart replacement for the root of a missing tooth. It’s a tiny, screw-like post made from titanium, which is a material that works really well with your jawbone.

The implant is placed into your jawbone, where it settles in and becomes a solid base for holding a crown, bridge, or denture. This means your new teeth will be firmly in place, just like natural ones. Plus, because titanium integrates smoothly with your bone, you get a stable and long-lasting support for your smile.

At Thornhill Dental Centre we can use dental implants to replace several missing teeth too - with one implant supporting a bridge that replaces multiple teeth in a row.

Your dental implant journey

1

Come and see us

Your first consultation with Dr. Koochek or Dr. Gracias at Thornhill Dental Centre is free of charge. During this visit, they will conduct a clinical exam and discuss your treatment options with you. If you decide to proceed, they will take scans of your mouth and create a personalised treatment plan.

2

A full assessment

You'll then return for a more comprehensive clinical exam, which costs £200, along with X-rays at your second appointment before starting your dental implant treatment.

3

Implant placement

During the treatment, the metal implant is placed into your jawbone and left for about three to six months to allow new bone to grow around it and secure it in place. This process, called osseointegration, is comfortable for you thanks to modern anaesthesia and is done in a completely sterile environment.

4

Time to heal

During this time, we can give you a temporary crown to fill the gap, or you might choose to leave the space open while it heals. It's normal to have some mild pain, bruising, and swelling afterward, but your dentist will prescribe medication and mouthwash to help manage these symptoms.

5

Your smile is restored

After the implant site heals and integrates with the bone, we can start making your custom crown, usually three to six months later. An abutment is screwed into the implant, and a false tooth that matches your other teeth is placed on top. The high quality restorations that we use in Cardiff are so natural-looking you might forget which tooth is false!

0% finance to spread the cost

At our Cardiff dental clinic, we are dedicated to making quality dental care accessible to everyone. To help manage the cost of the dental treatment you need, we offer finance options with up to 12 months at 0% APR.

Dental implants frequently asked questions

Does the dental implant treatment hurt?

Most patients experience only minimal discomfort during the dental implant procedure. This is because our dentist numbs the area, ensuring that you feel little to no pain during the process. Once that wears off, you may experience some mild discomfort or swelling, but this is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief and should subside within a few days.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene are key to keeping your implants healthy.

Can anyone get dental implants?

Dental implants aren’t the right choice for everyone. To be a good candidate, you need enough bone density and healthy gums to support the implant. Our dentists will evaluate your oral health and work with you to find the best solution.
